The blisters are subepidermal and rather bland, containing perhaps a little fibrin and, occasionally, red blood cells ( Fig. 1 A rare case of narrow-band UVB-induced pseudoporphyria has been reported in a patient being treated for psoriasis. 12,35 Young females are almost exclusively affected and PUVA therapy has also rarely been incriminated. 13–24,27–34 The use of UVA suntanning beds is also a well-recognized cause of pseudoporphyria. 7–10,19 A wide variety of other drugs, including various antibiotics (e.g., nalidixic acid, tetracyclines, and ciprofloxacin), antifungals (e.g., voriconazole), diuretics (e.g., furosemide (frusemide), torsemide), metformin, finasteride, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, ciclosporin, and oral contraceptives have also been incriminated. 1,2 The condition has also been documented following use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, including naproxen and cyclooxygenase inhibitors. Suggested risk factors in such patients include iron overload, aluminum intoxication, PVC-induced photosensitivity, drugs, and ethanol. 1 It may develop following both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and also in patients with chronic renal failure in the absence of dialysis. Pseudoporphyria is a UVA-related phototoxic dermatosis. In addition to these variables of personal appearance, suntanning is related to a positive attitude toward risk taking in general and to having friends who sunbathe and use sunbeds (see Health Behavior: Psychosocial Theories).Įduardo Calonje MD, DipRCPath, in McKee's Pathology of the Skin, 2020 Pathogenesis and histologic features Voluntary sun exposure is related to thinking more about one's physical appearance, to a higher fear of negative evaluations by others, and to a higher body self-consciousness and body self-esteem. The belief that a suntan improves one's physical appearance is the strongest predictor of suntanning. Therefore, getting a suntan helps people to make a good impression on others. Level of suntan is related to the perception of other people as being healthy and attractive in a curvilinear manner, with a medium tan considered the healthiest and most attractive skin color. The major motivational predictor for unprotected sun exposure is the desire for a suntan. Sun exposure not only accompanies many working and recreational outdoor activities, it is also seeked intentionally (for an overview of studies on psychosocial factors of sun exposure, see Arthey and Clarke 1995, Eid and Schwenkmezger 1997 ).
